WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT
Wu Family Tai Chi has a very clear and direct lineage, unlike many other traditional styles* of Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan), which are often “tweaked” by individual teachers and therefore evolve over time into numerous variants.
The head of the International Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan Federation, Grandmaster Wu Kwong Yu, is the great-great-grandson of the 19th-century founder Wu Chuan Yau, whose son Wu Chien Chuan created the modern style which we practise. At our Academy we follow a completely traditional syllabus designed and periodically reviewed by the Grandmaster.
The Bethnal Green Academy is the European Certification centre for Wu Family Style instructors.
* There are several recognised traditional styles of Taijiquan, including Yang, Wu, Chen, Sun and others.
Our Chief Instructor, Sifu (Master) Gary Wragg, has practised Taijiquan for over 50 years. He is a senior “disciple” of Grandmaster Wu Kwong Yu, and is recognised as one of Europe’s leading experts in Taijiquan. He has twice been the Chairman of the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain and is the current Chairman of the International Taiji & Qigong Federation.
All the senior instructors at the Academy have been meticulously taught by Sifu Gary Wragg for many years.
FRIENDLY AND ACCESSIBLE
There are very few clubs in the UK teaching Tai Chi and Chi Kung (Qigong) full-time, and with a permanent venue. Located in Bethnal Green in east London, we offer daily classes and a comprehensive syllabus for all levels from beginner through to advanced, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
You can start a beginners' flexible (?) course at any time, taking any Tai Chi classes from the timetable.
Tai Chi is an art which has so much breadth and depth that you can continue learning and improving for a lifetime. There is no pressure to “keep up” in our classes - every person can learn and progress at their own pace.
TRAINING - TAI CHI
Built around the ancient Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang - the harmony of complementary opposite forces in all things - Tai Chi Chuan is a sophisticated and supremely effective martial art. Its main objective is to achieve good robust health, peace of mind and longevity, while improving concentration as well as mental and physical efficiency.
Our syllabus is built around the classic 108-step Wu Family Long Form, and incorporates exercises designed to promote stretching, looseness and relaxation, and also meditation, pushing hands and self-defence.
TRAINING - CHI KUNG
Chi Kung, meaning Breath Work, trains mindful coordination of breathing with body movement resulting in a deep, refreshing and health-promoting experience. It is an essential component of Tai Chi training, and all our classes include some Chi Kung practice.
The Academy participates in many activities. Check out the Gallery.
While we have fully reopened indoor classes, some sessions are also available on Zoom.
Those members who join in-person training at the Academy are asked to kindly wash hands upon arrival and use the disinfectant gel provided.
Please judge your engagement in various activities according to your own needs and priorities.
